Granite or Quartz? You can find some pretty heated debates on the web over whether granite or quartz is better for kitchen countertops. Many quartz aficionados swear that quartz is stronger, cheaper, and needs zero maintenance. They’re almost extreme in their preference for quartz. But what are the facts? The table at the bottom of this post shows some startling similarities between granite and quartz, and it really shouldn’t be all that surprising, given that quartz is almost 90% natural stone.
Both quartz and granite, countertops or tile, are highly scratch resistant, although granite can be re-polished and repaired easier than quartz. In fact, many homeowners might not know that having their quartz countertop repaired may actually void their warranty. And in terms of maintenance, a simple application of sealer yearly will keep your granite glowing and stain free. Can you seal your own granite? Of course you can! It’s similar in complexity to dusting your furniture.
Because quartz is manufactured, you would assume that the product is cheaper, but actually, it depends. Quartz also comes in “slabs” and even though it’s manufactured, most manufactures only make one large, standard size and customers can end up paying for another “slab” of quartz even if they just need another 3 square feet. Granite can cost less per square foot if you hunt for bargains. Here at Coco’s, Vanessa is very skilled in hunting down bargains for her customers, combing the suppliers for the right granite slab at the right cost.
So what are the differences, really? Well, in a word, look. Quartz has a very consistent pattern and color throughout and lends well to very contemporary designs. It also comes in many colors and styles, so choices are limitless. Granite is has natural variations, and each slab is unique. You can never go wrong with natural stone, it’s timeless appearance is always a classic look.
